Intercultural, multigenerational, and community-wide dialogue

About

RAMmalogues is a monthly forum led by trained facilitators designed to generate intercultural, multigenerational, and community-wide dialogues around who we are and what matters to us.

All VCU students, staff and faculty are invited to engage in these sessions (listed below under "Upcoming Sessions"), share how their lives are impacted by their own social identities, and bear witness to the lived experiences of others in open dialogue.

Having a space to dialogue with each other is invaluable. We continue offering RAMmalogues sessions and provide facilitator training thanks to a gift from local philanthropist, Jacquelyn Pogue, and we are very grateful for her support.

Why do we need RAMmalogues?

We need more people to gain experience and become more comfortable with dialogue, particularly around identity-based issues and topics of diversity and inclusion. We think students, staff and faculty could all benefit from the chance to dialogue with each other about their lived experiences.

IExcel aims to to build our capacity for respectful and inclusive dialogue at VCU. Participating in RAMmalogues builds appreciation for difference through reflection and listening, and models leadership skills. RAMmalogues has the potential to build capacity for our community to engage in dialogue with an overall commitment to excellence and to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion.

RAMmalogues provides a shared experience and sense of connection through structured dialogue. We hope participants leave with increased awareness of effective dialogue and its power for inclusion.

The Benefits of RAMmalogues

  • Opportunities to share, listen, learn, and participate in inclusive dialogue and talk about topics of diversity and inclusion
  • Talk about and share one's own experiences related to diversity and inclusion and social identities
  • Gain exposure and appreciation for those who identify differently than oneself
  • Feel more connected to how other members of our community are feeling
  • Good preparation for learning to become more comfortable and confident in facilitating diverse groups
  • Increase comfort with participating in small and large group dialogue

Each month’s dialogue will focus on a different topic and invite participants to share their own personal experiences while also bearing witness to the experiences and perspectives of others. See previous topics listed under "Previous Sessions" below.
