August 3, 2017

Inclusive Excellence fellow, Professor Anita Nadal and her School of World Studies students have been volunteering with the World Pediatric Project, which brings critically ill children from developing countries to the United States for medical care.

Nadal and her students have been visiting with the children and their mothers, conversing with them in Spanish and teaching them basic English phrases, bringing the children toys and coloring books, and generally trying to make them feel welcome in a foreign country amid often difficult medical procedures.

Wanda S. Mitchell, former Vice President for Inclusive Excellence, dies at 57

August 3, 2017

We share with great sadness that Dr. Wanda S. Mitchell, former vice president for inclusive excellence, died Monday. Mitchell served as VCU’s founding chief diversity officer, charged with strengthening VCU’s climate of equity, diversity and inclusiveness.

"Wanda was a consummate professional who combined national perspective with a deep, personal commitment to help every person she met in any way she could," said VCU President Michael Rao, Ph.D. “She was insightful, empathetic and spectacularly kind. She was also a nationally recognized leader in diversity and inclusion."

"Wanda was a wonderful counsel, a compassionate colleague and a true friend. We all mourn her loss and feel so grateful for her indomitable legacy," Rao said.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with her family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

Dr. Mitchell spent more than three decades in higher education.  Read the full VCU News article, here.
